Charity Holiday Stocking

Sew a Stocking, Spread Some Joy!

What you get
For $5 (retreat price — these panels regularly sell for $14.99–$15.99) you get your choice of stocking panel:

  • All is Bright by Makower — printed pieces for 2 stockings, with hanging loops
  • Cozy Christmas by Anna Maria Textiles — 3 printed stocking fronts (teal, burgundy or cream dove designs), loop strips, and the instructions printed right on the panel. For this one you'll also need coordinating fabric for the stocking backs and lining

Every stocking you finish and hand in earns you one entry into our prize draw — make more stockings, get more entries. Please leave the stockings empty — that's how the charity needs them.

How to make it

  1. Cut a stocking front out of the panel on the dotted line.
  2. Use that piece as a pattern: for the Cozy panel, cut a back from coordinating fabric (right sides together so it mirrors correctly), and cut two lining pieces. The All is Bright panel already includes its back pieces.
  3. Right sides together, sew front to back with a 3/8" seam, from the top edge, down and around the foot, and up to the top on the other side. Clip the curves, press seams open, and turn right side out.
  4. Sew the lining the same way, but leave a 6–8" opening in one side seam. Leave the lining wrong side out.
  5. Make the hanging loop from the strip provided (or a coordinating rectangle): fold in half lengthwise and press, fold the raw edges in to the crease, fold again to hide the raw edges, and topstitch through all layers.
  6. Fold the loop in half and tack it to the right side of the outer stocking at the top edge by the side seam, loop pointing down.
  7. Slip the outer stocking inside the lining, right sides together, side seams aligned. Sew around the top edge with a 3/8" seam, keeping the loop tucked down and out of the way.
  8. Pull everything right side out through the lining opening, stitch the opening closed, tuck the lining down inside, smooth it all into place, and press well.

About the charity
Finished stockings will be donated to the Caring and Sharing Exchange — Ottawa's Christmas Exchange. Running since 1915, they put together Christmas hampers for thousands of local families every year. Your handmade stocking will go to a family right here in Ottawa, ready to be hung up and enjoyed on Christmas morning.
