If you've ever stood in front of a wall of quilting cotton (or scrolled a fabric shop's website) and felt your brain short-circuit, you're not alone. Fabric selection is one of the questions we get asked most in the shop — and honestly, it's one of the most fun parts of starting a new quilt once you know where to begin.
Here's the process we walk customers through, whether you're planning your first quilt or your fiftieth.
Every great quilt starts the same way: with one fabric that stops you in your tracks. Maybe it's a print with the perfect colour combo, a bold floral, or a novelty print that just makes you happy. Don't overthink this step — if you love it, that's your starting point.
Once you've found "the one," check the selvedge (the printed edge of the fabric) or the shop tag for the collection name and designer. That fabric almost certainly has siblings.
This is the trick that takes the guesswork out of fabric pairing: fabric designers release prints in collections, and every print in a collection is designed to work together. The blues will all be the same tone and hue, the colour palette repeats across prints at different scales, and the designer has already done the hard work of making sure everything reads as cohesive.
So instead of hunting the whole store for fabrics that "might" go together, pull up the collection your favourite print belongs to and see what else is in it. Nine times out of ten, you'll find your whole quilt sitting right there.
Once you've got your collection prints, it's time to add some blenders — low-key fabrics that add texture and breathing room without competing with your feature prints. Some of our favourites for this:
Canvas texture prints — that woven, canvas-look print without the actual weight or stiffness of real canvas, great for adding visual texture to a quilt top
Glaze or shimmer fabrics — a subtle sheen that catches the light without overwhelming the design
Dots, small geometrics, and tonal prints — these read almost like a solid from a distance but add just enough movement up close
Blenders are the unsung heroes of a quilt — they give your eye somewhere to rest between all those gorgeous feature prints.
Your background fabric is what makes everything else pop, and it's easy to overlook. Most quilters reach for a neutral — but "neutral" doesn't have to mean white or cream. A dark neutral (charcoal, navy, deep plum) does exactly the same job of letting your feature prints shine, with one major bonus: it hides stains beautifully. Our favourite quilts are the ones you can curl up under with a bowl of popcorn and not panic about the spills. A quilt is meant to be used, not babied.
If you're staring down a full collection and don't know how much of what to buy, grab a fat quarter bundle. It's the easiest way to get a little of everything in a collection at once, and it takes the pressure off committing to yardage before you know how a quilt is going to come together. From there, pull the individual prints — collection pieces, blenders, background — that feel right for your project. You can always go back for more yardage of your favourites once you see them together.
Colour on a screen is never a perfect match for colour in your hands — that's just the nature of shopping online. We do our best to photograph every fabric in the most photo-realistic, true-to-colour light we can, but if something arrives a little different than you pictured, that's genuinely okay. Nobody ever regretted having a well-stocked fabric stash, and that "not quite right" cut usually finds its way into a project eventually anyway.
If you're local, shopping in person has its own kind of magic. There's nothing like laying prints out side by side and physically rearranging them until something clicks — and our staff love playing fabric matchmaker. Don't hesitate to ask for a second opinion when you're in the shop; we've got some strong opinions on what goes together, and we love using them.
Find a fabric you love, shop its collection, add a couple of blenders for texture, choose a background that makes it all pop (dark neutrals are highly underrated), and grab a fat quarter bundle to get started. The rest comes together in your hands — and if a fabric doesn't turn out exactly as pictured, it just becomes the start of your next project.
